Sandra Jordan has turned inner city high rises into works of artistry and pulchritude, resulting in two unique and oddly powerful portfolios

The beauty of unloved buildings – in pictures
Jordan’s subjects, be they grey blocks of flats, unbuilt skyscrapers or aggressively cheery office buildings, are given dignity and even pride by her lens.

Ring the Bells! The Artists to Watch This December
Sandra Jordan focuses on the beauty of the natural and manmade world alike, but it is her distinct studies of urban architecture that are truly remarkable. While most artists look to highlight the grit and grime found in decaying concrete and ill-conceived modernism, Jordan strips these buildings of their surrounding contexts and presents them against an unending sky. Her images could be carefully conceived paintings, washed in grey with the tiniest inflections of colour found in a utilitarian blind or a lift shaft. You find yourself focusing on the patterns and systems that define these tower blocks, which offer a new way of considering a contentious form of architectural planning. Jordan likens these buildings to fortresses, “cold in appearance” and somewhat grotesque. But her photographs are vibrant and celebratory, possibly a world away from reality.

Inside Artists Magazine
Seeking out moments of solitude across the globe, Sandra Jordan takes the large and makes it small. Under the gaze of her lens, blue and black expanses of Arctic terrain and mountains are reduced to poetic whispers while whole cities of towering skyscrapers are condensed to a single point of ‘hidden beauty’. Meanwhile an eye for the subtle sees modest details heightened in contrast to their vast surroundings; taking centre stage and offering a moment of sensory escape for the viewer. Read more
